Although the concept of omnisexuality has been around since the 1990s, the first Omnisexual flag or Omni flag did not appear until 2015. However, the flag has continually brought many questions about what it means.

What is Omnisexual?

Definition of Omnisexual

Regarding terminology, Omni means “all” as a prefix in Latin, while sexual is based on one’s attraction toward other individuals.

So here is the definition of Omnisexual, according to Dictionary.com:

“Omnisexual refers to someone who is romantically, emotionally, or sexually attracted to persons of all genders and orientations”.

Those who identify as omnisexual are attracted to everyone. They might even be interested in someone from every possible gender orientation!

And it does not stop there. Many of these people are also open to sexuality beyond their own preferences for heterosexuality or homosexuality.

One thing about identifying as an omnisexual is that you can not really predict what sort of person will turn you on next. It could be anyone!

It can sometimes become complicated when society tells you what labels are associated with certain sexualities. But the important thing is to make your own decisions based on how YOU feel best defines yourself. It is not about what society deems ‘right’ or ‘normal’.

Omnisexual is different from Pansexual

In fact, these two terms are often used interchangeably because Pansexuality means attraction to people of all genders as well.

However, there is a slight difference between them.

Even though Omnisexual people can be attracted to anyone, they recognize that person’s gender identity or sexual orientation so as to get involved in the relationship.

Pansexual people don’t. They can have a romantic or sexual relationship with anyone. However, they do not care about that person’s gender identity or sexuality. Some may also say pansexuality means gender-blind.

The Omni Flag

Omni Flag Meaning Behind The Colors

In 2015, a Tumbler user @pastelmemer posted the image of the Omni flag for the first time online.

The omnisexual flag depicts five horizontal stripes with three primary colors from top to bottom: Pink, Black, and Blue.

  • Pink represents females, while Light Pink represents attraction to women
  • Blue represents males, while Light Blue represents attraction to men
  • Black (Dark Purple, Midnight Purple, Russian Violet, Telopea) symbolizes attraction to all genders

The Background of Omni Pride Flag

No one knew what it originally meant. Nor have they known why the official omnisexual flag appeared so late compared to when the term omnisexual came to the public.

Many netizens and online groups of Omnisexual culture, on the other hand, believe that — misconceptions about omnisexual people have brought the Omnisexual flag to the public’s attention.

Omnisexuality is still lesser-known sexuality, which has caused discrimination toward omnisexuals.

During the 2010s, many debates broke out online about which term to use to describe people attracted to all genders.

Because of this confusion between different labels, some individuals might feel obligated to take on something else just to avoid being misunderstood. But that does not make sense at all!

Instead of giving in to these demands because someone wanted it to be easier for them, it would do everyone well if we listened instead of rushing off judgmental opinions.

And above all else, we ought to embrace those with less understood orientation for who they really are, not what society tells us about them.

However, the debates on those online platforms seem to be unstoppable. They are even diverted to (albeit related) malicious and unnecessary conversations. And they can even make omnisexuals self-deprecating and possibly fall into depression.

For example, one of the questions asked was, “Are omnisexual, bisexual, or pansexual people promiscuous?” This kind of question often directs people to focus more on those gender identities. Meanwhile, they forget to take the rules for maintaining a relationship into account!

In that context, an Omnisexual pride flag was born to educate and affirm people about this sexual orientation.

It contributes to enhancing Omni’s awareness and thus makes people learn more about it. The more it is found and understood, the more Omnisexuals can escape the intolerance they never deserve.
