Origin of the breed

The Golden Retriever is a breed of dog that originated in England. As a result of crossbreeding between different breeds such as Retrievers, Tweed Water Spaniels, Setters, Spaniels, and even Bloodhound and Newfoundland breeds. The lifespan of Golden Retriever dogs is from 10 to 12 years, which is also quite high compared to other types of dogs.

Previously, Golden Retriever was called by another name, Golden Flat-Coat. They often help people in the position of working dogs or the right hand of hunters. Today, they are chosen to be pets and become close family friends.

They have a waterproof outer coat, and inside is a layer of fur that is both thick and smooth. This breed has two characteristic coat colors, dark yellow and light yellow. Also available in yellow, orange, or cream yellow.

Golden dog appearance characteristics

Golden is a medium-sized dog with a well-proportioned body. They have a large head and slightly beveled muzzle with strong jaws and extremely sharp teeth. Their noses are black, their eyes are brown with dark edges, their ears are drooped, and their tails are long but not curved.

Overall, their appearance is quite beautiful and attracts people’s eyes. The standard size of an adult Golden Retriever is:

  • Female: 55-57cm tall, 27-32kg weight
  • Male: 58-61cm tall, 29-34kg weight

This breed has an extremely sensitive sense of smell, so they are used for hunting trips and tracking for the police. In addition, this is also an excellent guide dog. Today, they are also raised as extremely lovely nannies to protect the home and the babies in the family.

History of the Golden Retriever

From 1868 to 1871, Tweedmouth bred the Nous dog with a dog named Belle, a dog of the Tweed Water Spaniel breed. The Tweed Water Spaniel, now extinct, is known to be an extremely intelligent and responsive hunting dog, but also very gentle, calm, and docile when kept indoors. These traits can all be easily seen in today’s Golden Retriever breed.

The descendants of Nous and Belle (of the Tweed Water Spaniel variety) were bred with Wavy (of the Red Setter – Red Setter variety). Tweedmouth keeps the yellow puppies for further breeding. After generations of breeding and selection, Lord Tweedmouth created a purebred Golden Hound with aristocratic golden color, instead of the black, red, and chocolate color of their ancestors.

This breed has a golden color, so it is named Golden. The special purpose of using dogs to hunt waterfowl should be called Golden Retriever.

At that time, the Golden dogs of Tweedmouth quickly made other aristocrats widely coveted because the Golden has shown itself to be a superior hunting dog with an extremely sensitive, agile, and very obedient nose.

The British Kennel Club officially recognized the Golden Retriever as a separate breed in 1920. The AKC (American Kennel Club) recognized the breed in 1932. Today, the Golden Retriever is the second most popular dog breed. 2 in the United States and is one of the most widely kept indoor dog breeds in the world.

The Golden Retriever breed is divided into several types, including:

  • British Golden: These dogs are popular throughout Europe and Australia. This breed is characterized by a bigger skull and more muscular forelimbs than other breeds. The fur of the British Golden Dog is lighter in color than that of the American Golden Dog.
  • American Golden (the most popular breed worldwide): American Golden Retrievers are taller and less muscular than the rest. Their fur is darker and more lustrous, and the amount of fluff is moderate.
  • Golden Canadian. This type of dog has thinner and darker fur and is taller than the above two types. The Canadian Golden Dog is bred mainly in Canada.

Why people love to celebrate Golden Retriever Day?

Golden Retriever Day

National Golden Retriever Day is February 3 every year. The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, and for good reason. Their calm, intelligent, and playful personalities make them the ideal best friend for any dog lover. In addition, they are also friendly animals with humans. Golden Dogs are great helpers with disabilities, for example, they can be companions for the blind. Or it could be a partner, acting as a soldier next to those who work in the field of security and society—no wonder they have a holiday named after them.

What is Golden Retriever Day?

Golden Retriever Day

The need for this breed arose when the common hunting dogs of the time proved incapable of gathering prey that had been hunted for humans. They needed a dog with a soft mouth and great catching ability, so they bred their best water hounds with a retriever, and that’s it! The first Golden Retriever was born.

National Golden Retriever Day was established when a woman named Kristen Shroyer realized that there was no set date to remember these dogs. She sets March 3 as the birthday of the late Golden, Quincy, who sadly passed away from cancer at the age of 7.

The importance of celebrating Golden Retriever Day

About the Golden retriever’s day in life, Golden Retrievers have grown tremendously. Not only are they excellent assistance dogs for disabled people, but they also specialize in the detection and search and rescue thanks to their excellent sense of smell.
